Lutein and zeaxanthin protect the macula from oxidative damage and blue light, potentially reducing the risk of AMD progression and improving visual function in some individuals with existing AMD.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids that accumulate in the macula, a central area of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. These pigments act as antioxidants, protecting the macula from oxidative stress caused by free radicals and high-energy blue light. By filtering blue light and neutralizing free radicals, lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression. Some studies suggest that they may also improve visual function, such as contrast sensitivity and visual acuity, in individuals with existing AMD.
